I learned a new word last night--chillax. Apparently it's a combination of chilling and relaxing. Peter is chillaxing a little too much right now. He has to be wide awake to have the tube out, and his breaths have to be consistently in the 20s-30s/minute. The doctor said it's fine to wait a few hours so the medication that makes him sleepy can get out of his system. If he doesn't start breathing and waking up more on his own in the next 6 hours, then it indicates his body is not ready to breathe on it's own yet. Right now he is hovering in the teens fairly consistently, but then he will have times where he stops all together and then it will go up to 30 for awhile.
We're praying for more regular breathing and that his meninges and other parts of his body may heal perfectly. I've been reading a lot about meningitis in infants this morning, and poor after effects sound very common. However, the doctor has sounded very encouraging that it is possible for Peter to make it through this without long term damage.
